About Us

Originally from Ireland, I have for some years been involved in
the running of my husband’s family trekking lodge in the remote Himalayan district of Manang. Manang is situated in the eastern upper reaches of the Annapurna region in Nepal. A small family run company, Celtic Manang Treks specialises in captivating and memorable treks across the Annapurna region. We would like the opportunity to share with you our experiences and knowledge of this fascinating country, its intriguing culture and its wonderful people.

RECENT HISTORY

Nepal is striving to overcome the legacy of a ten year Maoist rebellion. Rebel’s intent on setting up a communist republic waged a decade long campaign against the constitutional monarchy leaving 12,000 dead and 100,000 people displaced. It remains one of the world’s poorest countries.
The world’s last Hindu monarchy which had been in existence for the last 239 years was finally to be swept aside to be replaced by the republic of Nepal in May 2008. A new Maoist-dominated government took office in August of 2008. Even though Nepal has been very unsettled for some years it has always remained safe for tourists.

THE NEPAL HIMALAYA

Translated from Sanskrit, Himalaya means “abode of snow”. It is the youngest and highest mountain system in the world. Nepal’s exquisitely beautiful Himalayan trekking routs attract thousands of people each year.

The country can be divided into three main categories:
Furthest north runs the great Himalaya. Here lie the soaring snow caps of the highest peaks on earth.
Below these great peaks lay the middle mountains, where the lush valleys sustain a vast population of hill tribes.
Further south lays the sub tropical forests of the terai.

One third of the vast Himalayan range lays within Nepal. It is home to eight of the world’s fourteen highest peaks:

Everest: 8848 m
Kanchenjunga: 8586 m
Lhotse: 8516 m
Makalu: 8463 m
Cho oyu: 8201 m
Dhaulagiri: 8167 m
Manaslu:  8163 m
Annapurna i: 8091 m
