NAAR – PHU TREK

The ideal choice for the experienced trekker/camper looking for a bit of an adventure off the beaten trek. Previously restricted to trekkers, the Nar– Phu valley has been opened since 2002. The valley lies to the North-East of the popular Annapurna circuit trek. It is the Northern most outpost of the Manang district and a two day walk from the Nepal / Tibet border. Its people have a tradition of trading yak and salt and till today live a very traditional and pastoral life - they breed and herd yak to trade with the lower villages in the Manang valley. It is a unique Himalayan culture and sadly a dying one with the unfortunate infringement of roads into these beautiful remote valleys.

The trek starts on the route to Manang but breaks off the main Annapurna trail at a village called Koto just below Chame. Here you cross the Marsyangdi River and follow the Naar Khola up through narrow canyons and lush forests until you reach the higher mountains to a land of snow capped peaks, glaciers and high mountain passes.
A landscape abundant in flora and fauna with occasional glimpses of some of the world’s endangered species such as the blue sheep, snow leopard and the griffin vulture.

The valley is culturally rich with numerous ruins of old Khampa settlements, ancient gompas and shrines - Phugaon is the site for the Tashi Lakang monastery, and is highly revered as a holy pilgrimage site among the Buddhist population of the region.
